Lynchburg’s Travel Agent for European Vacations

Hi, I’m Chris

I plan European trips for people who want more than a packed schedule and a handful of “must‑sees.” The goal is simple: help you experience a place in a way that actually feels good while you’re there — and still feels meaningful once you’re home.

I’m not here to sell you a vacation package. I’m here to listen, think things through, and design a trip that fits how you travel.

Let's Talk

From Music Professor to Trip Whisperer

My path to travel planning wasn’t exactly direct.

I started out as a performing musician, then spent nearly 15 years as a university music professor at schools in Texas, Arkansas, and Virginia. Eventually, I shifted gears again and became an arts consultant with a large international NGO.

That job took my family and me abroad — first to France, where we lived for just over a year learning French, and then to Cameroon, Africa, where we lived for nearly nine years. Living overseas has a way of changing how you see everything. You learn quickly that culture, language, pacing, and logistics matter — and that small missteps can ripple through an entire experience.

Some of our travel was celebratory. Some of it was scrappy. There were big moments and very ordinary ones, like eating PB&J sandwiches out of the back of the car in Paris or figuring out public transportation with kids in tow. All of it taught me how trips actually unfold in real life.

Hidden Pearl Travel grew out of those years and the realization that thoughtful planning makes all the difference.

TLDR:

  • Married to Lori, and we have three grown kids

  • Performing Musician

  • University Music Professor for 15 years in Texas, Arkansas, & Virginia

  • Arts Consultant for an International NGO

  • Lived abroad for 10+ years

  • Fluent in French

  • Traveled to 35+ countries

  • When we’re not working, Lori and I take pottery through Lynchburg Parks & Rec.

A few fun facts & travel trivia

  • When we first arrived in France, I was speaking with a restaurant server and kept mispronouncing "Merci beaucoup" (thank you very much). I was pronouncing it as Merci beau-cue...which carries a very different meaning. You'll have to use Google to see what I was accidentally saying to the server!

  • When it’s crammed full of things. Some of the best travel days happen when you have time to simply absorb a place instead of racing through it. If you’re exhausted by day three, something went wrong.

  • A rental car. As Americans, not having one can feel strange at first. But in many European cities and train-connected regions, a car quickly turns from freedom into an anchor. There are much easier ways to move around.

  • One afternoon in a Paris café, we struck up a conversation with an American couple who turned out to be comedy writers for sitcoms I grew up watching. Totally unplanned. Completely human. That moment has stayed with me far longer than any major attraction.

  • Arrival timing. If I can arrange things so you land, clear customs, and go straight to your hotel without waiting hours to check in, that changes the entire first day. When it doesn’t work, you feel it immediately.

  • The local wannabe. I always want to blend in just enough to not feel like I’m passing through someone else’s home.

  • Bucket-list moments aren’t always the ones that last. The memories that stay are usually personal, interactive, and unexpected, not just a 30-second photo stop.

  • That’s a hard one, but I’d have to go with a Christmas markets trip in 2023. My wife and I spent ten days moving through Cologne, Liège, Luxembourg, Nancy, Strasbourg, Colmar, and Mulhouse. After years of tropical Christmases while living in Africa, it felt especially meaningful.
